The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body. It is important for producing protein and clotting our blood, and metabolizing cholesterol and sugar, among a range of other vital processes. A number of things can contribute to an unhealthy liver and eventually liver disease, including excessive use of some prescription medications, Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E, and iron overload. But according to Medicine Net, the number one cause of liver disease in North America is alcohol abuse.
There are a number of signs to look out for which signal liver disease. If any of the following apply to you, make an appointment with your doctor. There are a number of simple tests which can ascertain whether your liver is functioning healthily or not.

1) Fatigue and weakness. RM Healthy explains that tiredness is the most common symptom suffered by those with liver disease. Fatigue can be both a physical and mental issue, so you should speak to a doctor if you are feeling tired regularly even if you don't experience any of the other symptoms on this list.
2) Unusual coloring in your urine or stool. Pay attention to what you're passing on the toilet - if your stool is unusually pale, bloody or tar colored, or if your urine is dark, this could be a sign of liver issues.
3) Gastrointestinal issues. According to WebMD this can include nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, as well as loss of appetite and weight loss.
4) Bruising. The liver produces proteins necessary to help our blood clot, and since this process is hindered in those with liver damage, they are more prone to bruising and excessive bleeding.
5) Abdominal pain. Pain in the upper right-hand side of the abdomen, where the liver is located, is often caused by inflammation of the liver.
6) Swelling. Fluid retention is a common symptom of liver damage and often causes noticeable swelling in the abdomen or the legs and ankles, Liver Support explains.
7) Confusion. This can also include poor judgment, or trouble concentrating.
8) Skin discolouration. Dark-colored patches on the skin of your neck or under your arms may be a sign of fatty liver disease, according to WebMD.
9) Yellowing skin and eyes. The Mayo Clinic explains that jaundice affects both the skin and the eyes. Jaundice is caused by the liver no longer being able to process bilirubin, a yellowish waste product in the body.
10) Itchiness. Liver Support explains that this can be caused by a chemical in bile which builds up in the blood stream when the liver isn't working well enough to get rid of it.

The earlier liver disease is identified, the easier it is to reverse the damage, cure the disease, or at least prevent it from worsening. Even before you have liver disease you can be doing damage to your liver with lifestyle and dietary habits. It's easy to look after your liver, though - quit smoking, moderate your alcohol intake, and eat a healthy, balanced diet. If you have any of the above symptoms for an extended period, see your doctor for a check-up.
