Apple cider vinegar has been on the health and wellness radar for quite some time. Researchers have published articles about its effectiveness in killing microbes, treating ear infections, lowering blood pressure, and even treating jellyfish stings.
The newest apple cider vinegar craze is "Fire Cider." There are more than a few recipes touted by bloggers. All feature ingredients that would make most people question their sanity. But the health benefits are undeniable. The Kitchn claims Fire Cider can increase blood circulation, relieve sinus congestion, prevent illness, and aid digestion. When you try it, you'll feel it!

Herbalist Rosemary Gladstar has been making Fire Cider for more than 25 years. In her video below, Gladstar explains the health benefits of each ingredient. Horseradish opens the sinuses and works as a digestive aid. Onion is a fantastic anti-congestant, and garlic, known as "Poor Man's Penicillin," is a powerful antiseptic that not only fights infections, but also warms the heart. Ginger aids in digestion and circulation.

Recipe
Begin by chopping or grating equal parts horseradish, onion, garlic, and half-part grated or sliced ginger. Put all ingredients in a large glass jar, and then fill to the top with raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Finish with 1/4 teaspoon cayenne powder. Screw the lid on and shake. Taste the Fire Cider and adjust proportions to your taste. Once the Fire Cider is to your liking, put the jar away and let it sit for 4-6 weeks. After that time, strain the mixture, reserving the liquid. Sweeten with a bit of honey and keep the Fire Cider to use as salad dressing or to take as a shot when you're feeling under the weather.

Gladstar's recipe is just one of many. The Mountain Rose Blog adds jalapeño, lemon, rosemary, and turmeric to Gladstar's mixture of horseradish, garlic, onion, ginger, and cayenne. Wellness Mama keeps it simple, but recommends adding just 1 tablespoon dried echinacea root for an extra boost to the immune system.
