The red, swollen gums of gingivitis can make life miserable. Often, the gums bleed easily while being brushed. Flossing can even create discomfort and bleeding.
Generally, the cause of gingivitis is improper dental hygiene, so figuring out how to better care for your teeth and gums is the solution. Here are 7+ home remedies to help improve the condition of your gums.
1. Green tea. Containing antioxidants for reducing inflammation, green tea is recommended by Medicinenet to help with gum tenderness. Simply start drinking the tea regularly.
2. Lemongrass oil. Mouthwash helps kill bacteria and reduce plaque. Healthline shares that lemongrass oil helps reduce plaque. Make your own mouthwash from 2 to 3 drops of lemon oil in 8 ounces of warm water. Swish the mixture between your teeth for at least 30 seconds. Use the mouthwash two to three times a day.
3. Tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is known to help reduce gum bleeding, according to Medical News Today. Place 3 drops of oil in 8 ounces of warm water. Swish for at least 30 seconds, two to three times a day.
4. Hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide helps kill bacteria in wounds, and it does the same thing in the mouth. Medicinenet says to swish hydrogen peroxide in your mouth like any other mouthwash. Be certain not to swallow any.
5. Aloe juice. Also shown to help reduce plaque, 100 percent aloe vera juice is safe to use as a mouthwash and doesn't carry the same warnings about swallowing. Healthline recommends swishing the juice around in your mouth for at least 30 seconds, two to three times a day.
6. Salt water. This remedy has been around for years, but Medical News Today says that it is still really good. Swish salt water around your mouth two to three times a day to help improve your gums. The salt kills bacteria and aids in wound healing. Mix 3/4 teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of warm water.
7. Baking soda. To brush your teeth and kill bacteria at the same time, Medicinenet recommends using a baking soda paste. Add enough water to a small amount of baking soda to create a paste with which to brush.
8. Oil pulling. This remedy comes from Ayurvedic practices, but Medical News Today does say that it helps with removing plaque and bacteria. Put 2 teaspoons of coconut oil or Arimedadi oil in your mouth and suck it in and out between the teeth. Do this for about 30 seconds. Be sure to spit the oil out afterwards. You should drink 8 ounces of water before you brush then to help with the process.
9. Brushing and flossing. Colgate recommends the tried-and-true method of preventing and treating gingivitis and gum disease, regularly brushing and flossing your teeth. Often, this is all it takes to improve your gums.
