Exploring adrenal fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is not medically proven - but there are people out there who said their symptoms of feeling tired, stressed, and having a weak immune system has to be tied to a specific condition.
According to the Adrenal Fatigue Solution, these people believe that adrenal fatigue is, "a stress-related condition that occurs when your adrenal glands... are functioning below their optimal level". Essentially, WebMD explains that people who believe in adrenal fatigue believe their stress has inhibited their adrenal glands from pumping out enough hormones.

There's no evidence to support that adrenal fatigue is real
WebMD cites Robert Vigersky, MD - a past president of the Endocrine Society - in saying the symptoms attributed to so called adrenal fatigue are very common in people in general. And actually, there are proven conditions that affect the adrenal glands - but they don't produce the same symptoms.
For example, Addison's disease affects the adrenal glands, causing them to not make enough hormones. WebMD explains that in most cases of Addison's, the adrenal glands have been damaged by the immune system. Doctors can test for this disease and the symptoms include:
-Dark skin on the palms of your hands, knees, elbows, and knuckles
- General weakness
- Dizziness when you stand up
- Lack of menstrual periods
Conditions that can cause Addison's disease include:
- Tuberculosis (TB)
- Cancer, such as lymphoma
- AIDS
McGill notes that if you do have fatigue related to your hormones, it's more likely to attributed to a thyroid problem or diabetes than adrenal - as Addison's disease is very rare.
Symptoms can be tied to a number of other conditions
Even though people often blame their hormonal glands - like the adrenals or thyroid - for their tiredness, Dr. Vigersky says in many cases fatigue is due to common problems such as:
- Poor sleep habits
- Poor diet
- Stress at work or home
- Depression
People who claim to have adrenal fatigue and the associated symptoms:
- Tiredness
- Stressed
- Weakened immune system
- Low sex drive
- Back pain
- Joint pain
- Dark circles under eyes
Should see a doctor. These symptoms could be tied to other medical conditions like the ones we listed above - and speaking to your doctor about your symptoms can help them help you pinpoint the real problem.
It's also important to note that Dr. Vigersky says on WebMD that you should be extremely cautious with unproven treatments for adrenal fatigue. According to the Endocrine Society, some supplements which are sold on the promise to help with adrenal health can actually be harmful - some of the supplements even contain extracts of human hormone glands.

Again, if you experience any of the symptoms associated with the unproven condition called adrenal fatigue you should speak with your doctor.
