1. Using high heat. Lots of hair styles require hot rollers, curling irons, or blow driers to accomplish. Using these items on high heat does a lot of damage to the hair. Instead, WebMD recommends always putting a heat protectant on your hair first and setting all your hair tools to low heat.
2. Washing hair. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) states that people scrub their tresses with too much shampoo. Instead, the scrubbing and shampoo should only be used at the scalp where the oil is the thickest. Insider shares that hair should be washed every two to three days rather than daily, unless your hair is extra oily.
3. Using the wrong shampoo. A lot of shampoos sold on store shelves have sulfates in them, causing color to be stripped from the hair and leaving the scalp dry. Insider recommends reading labels and picking shampoos that are sulfate-free.
4. Towel drying. Who doesn't grab a towel after a shower and proceed to dry their hair by vigorously rubbing it? The AAD says this is a big no-no, as it weakens strands and causes them to break. Instead, wrap your hair in a towel. Nowadays, Turbie Twists are available and lessen the amount of twisting you have to do to your hair.
5. Conditioning. Whenever you wash your hair, you should condition it. Unfortunately, Insider reveals that most people are using too much conditioner on their hair. You only need a quarter-sized amount for most heads of hair. Definitely don't skip the deep conditioning before and after chemical treatments.
6. Braiding and using pony tails. Pony tails and braids are great for keeping hair out of your face, and many people braid the hair or tie it back when it's wet. WebMD states that you could be doing a lot of damage this way. Hair is weaker when wet, and the twisting to braid can easily break and weaken your hair. The pressure from the pony tails also cause hair to weaken and break. If you must put your hair in a braid or pony tail, make it loose, never do it when wet, and make sure the pony tail holders are not uncovered rubber bands.
7. Brushing. An old-wives tale is that to get silky hair, you need to brush it 100 times every day. The AAD says that is fiction. Too much brushing, and especially brushing it when wet, weakens hair strands and makes them more prone to breaking. Use a wide-toothed comb or pick to comb out wet hair.

8. Avoiding haircuts. If trying to save money or grow your hair out, Insider says that avoiding haircuts is one of the worst things you can do to your hair. If the hair begins to split, it needs to be trimmed before things get worse. Hair should be cut every six weeks to three months.
By changing these few things, you can have healthier hair. Isn't it worth the effort?
