7 cheap masks to try for healthier-looking hair

Dyeing, curling, and blow-drying your hair now and then won't completely ruin it — but do any of these often enough, and you'll end up with split ends and dry, brittle hair. To pamper your hair and replace some of the oil it loses every time you dry or color your hair, try applying a hair mask once a month.
A hair mask doesn't have to be expensive. In fact, you probably have many of the nourishing ingredients that Garnier recommends for masks in your kitchen right now.

Check out these seven masks you can make to restore a healthy look to your hair:
1. Avocado. Perfect for bringing back the shine to damaged hair, avocado combines easily with other ingredients for a great DIY hair mask. For example, DIY Natural's recipe includes half an avocado and 2 egg yolks. Just mix the ingredients thoroughly and apply to wet or dry hair, working the mask from the roots of your hair to the tips. Let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes before you rinse and wash your hair.
2. Honey. Honey might be sticky, but it can improve the look of split ends. DIY Natural recommends mixing 1 teaspoon oil, 1 tablespoon honey and 1/4 cup yogurt. Apply it from the roots to the tips on damp hair, and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes before shampooing as normal.
3. Coconut oil. To calm dry, frizzy hair, The Indian Spot recommends mixing 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 1/4 cup coconut milk and 1 avocado. Apply and let sit for 20 minutes before washing out.
4. Green tea. Green tea contains lots of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other beneficial ingredients, according to Garnier; combined with shea butter, it can help revive your hair's appearance. The Indian Spot combines 1 tablespoon coconut oil and 1 tablespoon matcha green tea. Apply the mask to your hair and let it sit for 30 minutes before washing your hair as usual.
5. Shea butter. Good for hydrating hair, shea butter is the star ingredient in beautymunsta's mask. Melt 1 tablespoon shea butter in a double boiler and combine it with 1 tablespoon argan oil, 1 teaspoon coconut oil, 1 teaspoon honey and 5 to 10 drops of peppermint oil. Work the mixture into your hair, and leave it in for 1 hour before washing out.
6. Eggs and mayonnaise. Although eggs and mayonnaise aren't on Garnier's list, Livestrong.com recommends them for strengthening and moisturizing damaged hair. Combine 5 tablespoons mayonnaise, 2 eggs and — if your hair's especially coarse — 1 teaspoon vinegar or olive oil to amp up the shine. Apply to your hair from roots to tips, cover with a shower cap, and a hot towel, and relax for 20 minutes before shampooing.
7. Vinegar. To restore some bounce to your limp hair, Reader's Digest recommends a vinegar hair mask. Mix 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons olive oil and 3 egg whites. Apply to your hair from the roots to the tips, and cover it for 30 minutes. Shampoo as usual.
